This date was chosen to commemorate a milestone international agreement\u2014the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, signed on September 16, 1987. This protocol marks a crucial step in the global effort to address an unexpected environmental crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>High above Earth\u2019s surface\u2014about 10 to 50 kilometers up\u2014there exists a thin ozone layer. This layer acts like Earth&#8217;s natural &#8220;sunscreen,&#8221; absorbing most of the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight. UV rays pose serious risks: overexposure increases human susceptibility to skin cancer and cataracts, weakens immune systems, damages plant life and marine organisms, impacts crop yields negatively, and threatens marine ecosystems&#8217; health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1970s, scientists such as Professors Rowland and Molina from America found through research that certain chemicals widely used by humans\u2014like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)\u2014were gradually depleting this crucial ozone layer in our atmosphere. In recognition thereof\u2014in1995\u2014the United Nations General Assembly designated September16th annually henceforth as International Ozone Layer Protection Day urging signatories worldwide towards concrete commemorative actions advancing protocol goals continuously!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrating scientific breakthroughs fostering proactive measures alongside achievements via collaborative efforts globally defines International Ozone Layer Protection Day! It underscores how safeguarding our vital ozone equates preserving essential blue skies ensuring planetary health &amp; safety universally!
